Field Trips Inspire Students

Students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa school share their experience exploring the outdoors at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre - feeding tuna (eels), listening for the calls of the ruru (morepork) and kiwi, among other adventures.

The overnight stay at Te Whare Taiao o Manukura in the heart of a 942-hectare ngahere (native bush) at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre is a special opportunity for youth to be inspired by outdoor learning, with many saying they would like to become true guardians of Te Taiao (the environment) & connect with the mauri (life force) of the forest.

Our  Schools Behind Our River project helps fund field school trips like this one as a way to inspire local youth to experience the outdoors and to appreciate Nature, Mātauranga Māori, and the importance of protecting our biodiversity.

Special thanks to One Foundation and Nikau Foundation for their support.
